'Cuppa' Feedback

Narratives about women and the preparation, pouring, serving and drinking of tea abound in Transcultural Englishes. Numerous linguistic expressions and metaphors can be found that link 'tea' with gendered socio-cultural practices.

For example in English an occupation such as tea-lady has been the focus of gender-inclusive language reform. The pouring of tea for more than one person has been described as being Mother in British English. However, in Australian English billy tea and throwing the billy have been seen traditionally as part of  masculinity.

We are interested in collecting and posting to this page examples of 'tea' expressions and practices found in Transcultural Englishes. We hope to include a gallery of tea cups and other tea-making implements. Please send your contributions to Jo Winter.
